1. Preporation and planning
- will often get a mood board from clients.
- but sometimes you will get your designs sent back from
the client. there is a lot of negotiation between you and
them. (can not take this personally)
- designs will change constantly. / Even on the day
you may not be 100% sure the design you have is
what will go on the model.
- G-strings polyester and cotton mix. To paint on.
- Bras. sometimes companies
- shower gels for models to wash off.
For the shoot
- You need to find out what the scene/day involves.
what will the model be doing.
- Should you waterproof everything with
How much of the body is going to be painted?
- work out timings.
- can you make things for the shoot before hand?
2. Model Selection
- Look after your models. they are your responsibility. Make sure they do not get cold. etc. (gowns/ hot water bottles/ hats (if not setting hair.)
- Make sure they have drinks. /food.
- Dancers are a good source of models. (good posture, confindence.)
- Need someone who is fairly flat chested (if female) looks better.
3. Budgeting
- There are a lots of ways to save money when bodypainting.
- If working with fullers earth/ latex - ready mix kids paint (must be child friendly). its a lot cheaper than makeup. Really good in Metallics. - BUT NEVER PAINT STRAIGHT ON THE BODY.
- Make your own stencils. - big pieces of acetate are good. draw on and use hot pens to cut plastic.
- sometimes if you are doing something high profile, you can approach companies and they may supply products for free. in exchange for free advertising.
4. Research
-Timing - on average 3 hours per bodypaint. (will cut down time with good prep and an assisstant.)
Inspiration is everywhere
- Nature
- The arts
- Modern art. (brian froud drawings.)
- Children mythical books.
- Film - such a great source.
- Magazines.
- Social Media: Instagram/Pinterest.

Aizone Typographic Body Painting Campaign
Body Painting artist- Anastasia Durasova.
Photographer- Henry Hargreaves
Art direction & design- Jessica Walsh.
Jenny Townend -
"Putting a white base on is one of the hardest things. I often goes patchy/streaky and is hard to look flawless."
However for this makeup by Artist Anastasia Durasova she has managed to make a really even paint job. To do this she did not use an airbrush but rather painted on the makeup by hand, and used stencils.
I also like the fact that she used wigs and left them paint free. i believe it gives a more fashion look.

Tips For Starting Out As a Makeup Artist
- You have to be the best assisstant you can be.
- NEVER think you are better than others. are better than anything.
- Always help people to clean brushes/ make tea etc.
- Keep well informed with what is going on with the industry.
- Keep your website/ portfolio updated.
- Re-invent yourself as a makeup artist constantly
- Don't take things too personally. you wont fit into every team.
- Be careful with what you publish online. (especially if you are working on a big feature- keep it under wraps)
- Make use of social Media.
- Keep up to date with Fashion. Often campaigns will be inspired by fashion/film.

Tips When Bodypainting.
Always do an underbase of colour so that the makeup is not streaky or patchy.
Use a darker colour on the outside and the contour of the body is more flattering to the model and makeup.
Choose colours that are completmentary to eachother - Consult colour wheel.
For this Makuep Julia used fullers earth mixed with cream based makeup.
If using fullers earth blend flour with it to help it bind and not flake off.
