Second Tutorial With Pete

Idea Development

I took my idea to Pete before I really knew what I wanted to create fully, I had the idea of technology and mutants with satire, making a comment on how we as a society are addicted to mobile phones.

Controversial Playstation Ads
The Advertisements below for Playstation are deemed controversial, they seem to be the only technology adverts that do this, and include, the body and prosthetics/photoshop in such a way.
I hope to create something that could be used for a controversial advert like this, something satirical that comments on our use of technology.
-
I like the use of veins in this photo, as well as the symbols that is associated with the consol. It reminds me of drug addict makeups i have seen, or body building veins, something that gives the impression that it is addictive.
Below are some initial sketches for some ideas for this project.
The first being a phone on the head, by the side of the head, I want it to look like it is growing from inside the person, as a tumour. However I don’t want it to look like its just stuck on the side of the head. I want it to look like it is a part of the model.
I like the phone idea, as I think that gives the strongest message.
Although the first sketch is my preferred idea, I think it is important to try other ideas.
After talking with Pete, he believes that one makeup will be enough for a 20 Credit unit, however I might try and incorporate more ideas into the final thing.
Other Technology?
The design below incorporates a Bluetooth system into the head, however I think that isn’t current enough for this makeup and message. I also want to incorporate the hair, and I don’t think this would allow that.
However I like the ideas of veins down the neck.
Below is my second favourite idea, I think that there is some good risk taking with covering the eyes. I just don’t think that it gives the same message that the phone one does.
If I were to do this, I think there would be some good experimentation with bald caps, but I think that it would be good for an advert, like the ones at the end of the page.
Recently there has been more and more popularity surrounding wearable technology, it would be an interesting thing to explore, but I don't like the work on the hand or wrist.
Another idea would be to use a clock, this reminds me of Alice in wonderland or something. That could be quite character-like. it is a possible choice as combines a lot of the technical idea I want.
In all of these advertisements what makes them controversial is that they are adverts that do not confirm with the "Ideal" the idea that purchasing this product will improve your life, or make you stronger, more appealing and better looking etc., like so many adverts do. In stead these adverts include scars, and facial hair and models in odd poses that is rarely seen in the mainstream.
-
Thinking about who these adverts are focused on. Young adults, men more than women, who are more susceptible to images that oppose societies standards of beauty, this is because of the internet and alternative media.
-
In continuation with the image above, the images below never fails to show/remind the buyer what they are selling, through symbols, even if they are embedded in a crown or the skin.
-
No matter what the image, there is always a message behind it, one that fits with a slogan.
