Dixie George- Specialist Practice
For this makeup I wanted to sketch out many ideas, I decided blocking out my ideas first was necessary, therefore I used a photo of my model, and laid acetate paper on top, and just used a felt pen to draw out the ideas i had, to see how they might work on the head.
I spoke to Kat about my design and she gave me the following advice, before doing any of these sketches.
"Think about communication, and the different ways of doing so with the face organs. Such as the throat and talking, the ear and listening, and the communication through eye contact."
Below are the thumbnails for this design, and then the larger photos themselves, which I will comment on and evaluate.

Idea 1
The first thing I sketched out was just a generic idea, of the phone, embedded within tumours and veins coming from it.
I just wanted to get the basic idea down. This is very basic, but show the main elements I want to incorporate.
Idea 3
For this makeup I have been researching human anatomy, especially veins and vessels in the head, before drawing out any more designs I decided to sketch in the Carotid Artery. To see if i could base some sketches and makeup ideas around this feature, in order to bring realism to my makeup.
Below are two designs I made in Photoshop, so these I super imposed photos of tumours and keypads onto a photo of my model. This is to get more of a realistic idea of what the makeup could look like.
By testing more 3D shapes and more detailed colouring, compared to the sketches above.
For this design, I tried to incorporate more of the head into it, going back into the hairline further. As you can see on the drawing how I want to lay or punch hair through the prosthetic where the natural hair would be. I don't know how much to bring the hair down, but I want it to look realistic, from all the research I have done, a lot of the tumours in the hair does not grow hair.
Also with this design I think that it is too bulky and square, and goes too far round the back of the head. I prefer the design above, I think that there needs to be a medium between these two.
Also the difference in this design to the previous is the keypad, another idea would be to match this with the tumours in a way, and have the colouring more like this.
This is an idea of what I want the screen to look like. I think it would look really good it this part lit up somehow, or gave the illusion that it was glowing.
Also the veins glowing onto the skin.
One ideas for the keys would be to have them to match the screen, and be really detailed with the keypad sculpted like its part of the face.
These are real photos of tumours, that i have pasted onto these design, I have put them in certain places, specifically behind the ear, on the neck, as this is where the tumours grow, when a person has cancer.
Also note the colours, still matching his skin colour, but slightly paler, and some irritation and purple veins/blood vessels through them.
Below I had the idea of including an aerial, I think that this would be more satirical, and funny, but I don’t think I will go with it. However I like the progression in this sketch of the phone to clumps of smaller tumours integrated with veins.
Fig. 16.17 shows an idea with the artery incorporated, the shape is really hard to work with, but I wanted to try something with a different sort of keypad symbol and a much simpler screen, which i think the latter works, but I don’t think that the small keypad squares, allow it to be identified as a phone as much.
i think i will not include the carotid Artery in my design as it cuts straight through the head, where i want the prosthetic to blend onto the face more.
Idea 2
These sketches show the ideas I want of the tech symbols incorporated into the design and the veins, for the idea in Fig. 16.15 I had the idea of instead of a phone, trying to incorporate some technology and media symbols into the prosthetic, but I like the idea of the veins turning cyborg-like and this is definitely something I wish to experiment with further.
I am not sure how, but I thought that it would bring the idea of you societies addiction in a different way. However I believe that the composition of this won't work.
I like the shapes of this tumour and ear in Fig. 16.15, and also in these two designs, how it protrudes onto the eye. This would be an additional challenge in this makeup.
What I like about the design below is the crack in the screen, I think that in my head, the phone is pristine in the tumour, but it could be a good experiment to have it a bit broken, or veins overlapping it. I also like the groups of tumours in this sketch.
Also in the design below I have experimented with the idea of a separate section with a wire coming from it, this comes from reference photos and research of people with hearing aids, and how wearable bionic technology works. But i think that it will be to complicated to incorporate with wires coming in and out of the makeup, and also complicates the message. Therefore I will discard it.
Idea 5
For this sketch I just wanted to do something really different, in my head I am a little stuck with the same image, so the main purpose of this sketch was to sort of free my mind a little, I do not intend to use this design, it is too much like other artists work.
Idea 4
This idea below takes away from the disease and the tumour, and replaces it will more tech ideas. The lines on the face replicates WIfi signals. I don't like this design, but I wanted to try something more tech inclined just to see what it would look like.
